The internet is full memes and consists of confusing slang. One term you may have come across is the HMU. It's everywhere: social media, chats, text messages, and even dating apps.

But what does the HMU text mean? HMU is the acronym for Hit Me Up. It's an invitation for someone to contact you. Often not capitalized, as is the style these days.

The original context of using the word and saying "hit me up" to someone is when asking for something like it can be used in the context of money. Example: "My brother hit me up because his business went bankrupt."

This still makes sense, but the definition has been expanded in order to encourage contact. Like, message me or get in touch if you need me I know where I am. Therefore, when you see the acronym HMU online, it’s probably what people would mean.

HMUs are used online, primarily on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, and chat apps such as Snapchat and WhatsApp. Do not dare to yell "Hit me up", as the acronym is not in common usage, and will sound super eerie for common parlance, therefore, use HMU online only.
